THE POWER OF SELF-CARE

What is Self-care? I know most of us think it’s putting on face mask, exfoliating and all those stuff you do in the shower. Self-care is more than that. It is a way of showing yourself love…yeah love! and also improving yourself. I’ll be talking on six(6) types of self-care.

  • Physical Self-care
  • Emotional Self-care
  • Spiritual Self-care
  • Intellectual Self-care
  • Social Self-care
  • Sensory Self-care.

You want to pick a day of the week best suited to you to treat yourself right. Personally I chose Sunday as my self-care day. It all depends on your schedule.

Physical self-care

Physical Self-care is what we’re all familiar with. It is important and plays a huge role on our body physically.

  • Morning routine
    • You would want to wake up early, you want to give yourself a princess treatment which usually takes time.
    • Have a healthy breakfast and get in the shower(now here’s the real deal)
    • Exfoilate; it’s been a long week, all the sweaty days, dusty days, dry days and all that,it’s time to clean those pores.
    • Shave; yeah obviously! Do you shave your legs baby girl? I just started doing that myself and damn! I love that stuff. You know that Instagram celebrity you always fantasise about, her smooth and flawless glowing skin,have you noticed her smooth legs too? You can also achieve that with a good leg shaving routine. Here’s how;
    1. Exfoilate; trust me when I say you don’t want to dry shave, dry shaving will leave your skin itchy and irritated.
    2. After exfoliating, apply shaving cream or baby oil. If you’re using a shaving cream be sure to know the right one to use for your skin,I recommend using one for sensitive skin.
    3. Use men’s razor for a more closer shave but be careful around the knees and thighs, those areas can be very tricky. Using a spatula(not the spongebob type)I mean a shaving spatula, might not give you a close and smooth shave. Be sure not to press the razor on your skin to avoid leaving marks after.
    • Apply a face mask
    • Take a lukewarm shower
    • Moisturize immediately you get out of the shower and apply some oil for a more silky and softer feel. I recommend coconut or jojoba oil.

Emotional self-care

  • Paint or draw; you might not be an artist,it’s just all about been free, get a pen and paper and draw whatever comes to your mind. You can draw your bestie even if your drawing looks like this

Send it to him/her,laugh and have fun. You won’t realise how much relief doing this is until you try it.

  • Say some affirmations; look in the mirror and appreciate who you are, tell yourself how beautiful you are, give yourself accolades on how far you’ve come in life or something that means a lot to you might be your business, studies,a goal you’ve achieved or something you’re working on. Give yourself some praises, you deserve it.
  • Dance! No one is watching

I’ve tried this several times and I can tell you it’s such an happy pill. Jam your favourite song/playlist on speaker and move your body. No one is watching so dance anyhow you’d like. You’ll have to hop back in the shower after doing this though.

Spiritual self-care

You’re probably thinking to yourself “is there such thing as spiritual Self-care”,yes there is and here are some practices to try.

  • Meditate; take 5-10min to sit in silence and breathe. Relax and focus on your breathing. Your mind might wander off but it’s normal, don’t fight it just slowly focus on your breathing exercise again. Meditation helps reduce stress and anxiety, lowers blood pressure and also improves sleep. • Give to a cause you believe in(charity or donation)
  • Take a walk in nature.

Intellectual self-care

  • Learn a new skill; you know that DIY hack or food recipe you’ve been saving from tiktok and YouTube. It’s time to actually try it. You might not need it just yet,you don’t have to wait until you need it before you try it out. You never know when it’ll come in handy.
  • Read a book
  • Listen to an educational podcast

Social self-care

  • Declutter your social media; unfollow people that don’t serve your cause.
  • Delete screenshots, videos and images you no longer need. Pretty sure we don’t check our phone storage space regularly to know how much space we have left. Doing this will help avoid wanting to capture a moment or save something and next thing your phone tells you “storage full” how frustrating ikr! Delete those unnecessary stuffs now.

Sensory self-care

  • Burn a scented candle; I’ll talk more on aromatherapy in future post.
  • Listen to music; not sad and heartbreak music. Listen to songs that’ll boost your mood and motivate you.
  • Watch a movie; You don’t need to be with your boyfriend before you Netflix and chill. Baby girl it’s your self-care day, grab some snacks, sit back, relax and watch that movie you have been wanting to or one everyone is talking about.
  • Buy yourself a gift; start saving more so you can get yourself those things you desire so bad. Don’t wait around for someone to do it for you. There’s more value doing it by yourself for yourself.

Conclusion

Having one day of the week to yourself(Self-care day) and doing some of the things I listed above if not all will slowly build an habit that’ll change your life. On these days you get to reflect, delete and improve thereby becoming a better version of yourself.

Remember this:

“How people treat you is a reflection of how you treat yourself “
